The Finnish Alt-Pop Artist Turns Stillness Into A Quietly Striking Plea For Protection

Conchis makes music from the uneasy territory between endurance and collapse. On Under Your Feathers
, the Finnish electronic alt-pop artist gives that threshold a strange, suspended beauty, building a song that reaches quietly toward protection without pretending that safety has already arrived. Taken from her upcoming album, Gravity, it carries the feeling of a body held down while the imagination keeps reaching upward.
The arrangement lives inside that contradiction. Hopeful arpeggios flicker at the opening, bright and crystalline, before widening into immense synth pads that seem to dissolve the edges of the room. Conchis lets that openness linger, but never allows it to become weightless. Haunting basslines gather underneath, while tightly wound percussion restores a sense of gravity. The music is constantly negotiating opposing forces: ascent and pull, brightness and density, the desire to escape and the reality of remaining exactly where you are.
Those tensions are inseparable from the circumstances in which Gravity was composed. During a severe crash caused by ME/CFS, Conchis was unable to work in a conventional sense, so the album took shape internally. Beats, melodies, basslines and lyrics were assembled in silence and held in memory before they could become recordings. That process gives Under Your Feathers
an unusual emotional architecture. The song does not describe illness from a distance or inflate it into spectacle; it moves according to the constrained, hyper-attentive logic of living through it, where energy is finite and every action carries consequence.
I wrote it as a kind of plea,
Conchis explains. For me and a friend who was going through something similar. We had both been unwell for a long time, unable to work or participate in life in the way we used to. We became each other’s support system. This song is asking for something larger than us to take us in, to protect us, to let us heal.
That idea of shelter gives the title its emotional centre. The feathers suggest softness, enclosure and protection, but the song never treats comfort as something easily obtained. Its restraint matters: rather than reaching for a grand cathartic release, Conchis allows longing to remain unresolved. The ache sits inside the production, in the distance between luminous synths and darker low-end pressure.
There is a clear continuation from the fractured electronic intimacy of her debut Chapters, but Gravity pushes that language into a more severe, spacious frame. Conchis’ background in design and symbolism can be felt in the precision of those contrasts. Elements arrive with purpose: melodic details offer brief warmth, colder textures close around them, and silence becomes part of the composition rather than simply the absence of sound.
Under Your Feathers
ultimately feels less concerned with overcoming hardship than with surviving inside it. Its plea is simple — to be protected, to be given time, to heal — but Conchis leaves space for the harder truth beneath it: sometimes endurance means continuing before relief appears. The song remains suspended there, reaching upward while still carrying the weight below.
